San Diego Gas Prices Hit Highest Level Since November 2023
San Diego County's average gas price has climbed to $5.47 per gallon for regular unleaded, marking the highest level since November 1, 2023, according to AAA. The steady increase over the past six weeks has added roughly $15 to the cost of filling a typical sedan's tank compared to January.
Why Prices Are Rising
Several factors are driving the increase. California's cap-and-trade program costs have risen, seasonal refinery maintenance has tightened supply, and crude oil prices have edged upward amid ongoing geopolitical tensions. The state's unique gasoline blend requirements, mandated for emissions standards, also contribute to California consistently having among the highest gas prices in the nation.
"San Diego drivers are particularly impacted because of the region's car-dependent infrastructure," said Auto Club spokesperson Sarah Chen. "With limited public transit options compared to cities like San Francisco or Los Angeles, most San Diegans have no alternative to driving."
County-Wide Impact
Prices vary across the county. North County coastal stations average $5.62, while East County stations tend to be slightly lower at $5.31. The cheapest gas in the county can be found along the I-8 corridor near El Cajon, while La Jolla and Del Mar stations lead the high end at over $5.80.
What's Ahead
Industry analysts expect prices to continue climbing through April as refineries complete their spring maintenance cycles and switch to more expensive summer-blend gasoline. AAA projects the county average could reach $5.75 by mid-April before stabilizing.
Drivers looking to save can use apps like GasBuddy to find the lowest local prices, consider carpooling, or take advantage of the MTS transit system's $6 day pass for non-driving commute days.
